Less Is More For Library Staff

HARROW UNISON REDUCES JOB LOSSES IN HARROW’S LIBRARIES AND NEGOTIATES PAY RISES FOR STAFF

 

Faced with a mountainous task to reduce the 29 jobs that were at risk from redundancy as a result of Harrow Council’s privatisation of its Library Service to John Laing Integrated Services (JLIS) on the 1st September 2013, Harrow UNISON have significantly reduced the job loss total to 5 posts.

It’s a dark and wintry early start for Dexter who works as a Loader in Harrow Council’s Waste Service emptying the bins of local residents all year round, whatever the weather.  As he leaves for work he glimpses an unopened energy bill and winces at the thought of soaring utility bills and the ever-increasing cost of putting food on the table and in meeting annual child care costs.

Harrow Council proposal to delete the role of Chief Executive 

We believe that the Leader’s proposal to delete the role of Chief Executive has been haphazardly constructed with little thought as to the long term financial impact to Harrow Council.  

It may be the case that that the role of Chief Executive does not feature in the long term political plans of the current Leader but we fail to recognise the benefits of deleting a position that has delivered £75 million worth of savings over six years and is responsible for a budget of several hundred million each year.
