CAMPAIGN TO DEFEND TERMS & CONDITIONS AND RESUME MODERNISATION TALKS

“modernise” and save money.  However, UNISON highlighted throughout negotiations that their plans to remove contractual overtime and unsocial hours payments will hit the low paid, mainly women and frontline staff the hardest.

They also plan to remove Essential Car User payments which will impact important and emergency services our residents rely on and slash the redundancy scheme making it cheaper to sack staff.

Far from being a fair and equitable approach, the plans are simply an attack on the low paid

In early January 2012 the Council acted quickly and closed down negotiations when the GMB refused to engage in further talks leaving discussions up to that point, meaningless.

Following a Cabinet report later that month, the Council decided to consult directly with the workforce by way of an undemocratic and potentially one-sided ballot on proposals that could be far different than what was discussed in negotiations and which take no account of the inequity of the situation.

The Branch has urged the Council to return to the negotiating table in order to finish what UNISON representatives started in November 2011.  We believe that the approach adopted by the Council is foolhardy and legally very risky.

It is completely unnecessary, unfair and unjustified to fire approximately 5,000 staff and re-hire them on worse terms and conditions of employment when discussions have not failed.

To that end, we ask each of our members and local residents to download the letter at the bottom of this page, complete it with your ward Councillor’s name to find out who your ward Councillor is click here  and your address and date and send it to them without delay.

We must urge the Council to return to the negotiating table and resume talks before it is too late.  Please keep the pressure up and support your Branch.
